....Take blood pressure meds before reading. I'm a firm believer that if you are going to study something, you have to read across the spectrum of opinion, as well as fact. Source material like this pamphlet have to be read no matter how foul. The scholarship is poor, the premise is racist, and the author was a prime example of strong southern opinion. Nonetheless it is a piece of history. Anyone studying the run up to the civil war who needs an example of extreme southern opinion: Here it is. Hence the three stars.

The Right of American Slavery Hoit T W True Worthy 9781318954131 Books Reviews

I believe it is imporant to get perspective on opposition belief even if it is dead. This book is a pro-slavery argument published a year before Civil War. Even though I believe the arguments are stupid, I do feel like I got some understanding from this book and others can learn from it too. It is an easy read that is short but can be disorganized. This edition does not have a good table of contents nor go to navigation.

SPOILER summary of the arguments by Hoit

The main argument this book centers around is that negros are barbarians and slavery is how we civilize them.

Arguments for the case that negros are barbarians.
1) Negros come from Africa and are descendants from tribes that do barbaric things. Those tribes are concurrently doing barbaric things. He provides researched examples of African cannibalism. The examples of cannibalism does come off as exaggerated.

2) Jamaica has fallen into barbarism. I am not informed enough on what is going on in this country for comment.

3) Negros are built for warm weather in which makes them not incline to civilize.

4) The North are hypocrites that don't want negros to move there in mass numbers because they know this.

Arguments saying that negros are built for slave labor

1) They have large limbs.

2) They are not smart enough to self govern.

3) They have been slaves before European imperialism. He is right that Africa was in bad shape and had slavery when Great Britain came along.

Argument for why negros need slavery to be civilized

They are barbarians and will go back to their natural barbarian state unless we stop it. It is immoral to allow a human to become this. Force labor is similar to putting a murderer into slavery (prison). We take rights away from those incline to barbaric acts.

That is the summary of Hoit's main argument but he had more arguments.

1) The economy will be bad if slaves are free and shipped to Liberia. They are a weight if left here. Shipping them is costly.

2) Great Britain is pushing against slavery to take revenge of USA.

3) "All men are created equal" was written by Thomas Jeffersun who owned slaves. He only meant whites.
